So I’m taking a little bit of a break from running which means that being ready in time for Buffalo is in jeopardy if not completely off the table as an option. Over the past week or two, my left foot really started bothering me. The top of the foot hurts for about the first mile or two that I run and feels very similarly to the stress fracture I had in high school that ended my very short and uninteresting running career to date at the time. It took a long time for me to heal after that so I’m hoping that I caught it early enough this time that I won’t be out of commission for months.

Shooting for the Rochester marathon in September if I heal in a reasonable amount of time.

Time to go buy a bike I suppose!

So it became a little excessive with the daily posts about each run, so I kinda gave up on that. I hope everyone is sorely disappointed.

Instead, I figured I would just write when I had something reasonable to say. This week, it is the fact that I am entering unknown territory. This weeks long run is 14 miles long and will be the longest I’ve ever run. Exciting. Other than that it’s been going OK with the exception of Week 5 during which I basically had to do two long runs because of a scheduling conflict.

Oh! Also got new shoes! Asic GT-2140. They feel good. I had about 500 miles on my old shoes, which I think is excessive for me. With the new ones it feels like I’m running on clouds. Nice.

So today was a 5 mile ‘pace’ run where I had to do the run at race pace, which for me (hopefully) is 8 min/mi. I’m a little sick of risking my life trying to run long distances around here when its dark out, so I decided to take a tip from a co-worker of mine and run along the canal during my lunch break. Worked out pretty well. I was happy to run with light and not have to follow any busy roads. Trusty GPS watch kept me on pace too!!

Distance: 5 mi

Total Time: 00:39:14

Avg Pace: 7:51 min/mi

Avg Speed: 7.6 mph

Max Speed: 8.6 mph

Second day of training, first day of running. Did a quick 3 mile run, paced a little over 9 minutes which is what I’m shooting for (I’m trying to train about 45-75 seconds slower than I expect to race).

The big news is that I picked up a Garmin Forerunner 405 to run with. I’m still playing with it to see what it can do, but it seems pretty rad so far. For those of you not in the know, its a GPS watch for runners/bikers. It maps your route for you and keeps your time/pace/distance and all that fun stuff. I’m a sucker for gadgets so I couldn’t help it.

UPDATE: Been playing with the watch some and figured out a reasonable way to show my running routes here… So here’s what I did tonight.

2.95 mi, 00:26:46, 9:04 pace

Gotta love any training program that begins on a rest day. I technically start today, but the running doesn’t start until tomorrow. I’m glad that weather from last week is gone, I have a better chance of surviving this now.

I have to figure out some way to post my training schedule so I can refer to it. I will get back to you shortly…

Good day.
